Personal Project: Abstraction
when we first started this project sir asked us what Abstract means. I thought that abstract meant the same thing as contrast but I was very wrong. I now know that abstract is not the same as contrast and its very different its more of taking a photo and not knowing what the objects are in the image.
Focus:
Light: Line: Repetition: Shape: Space: Texture: Value/Tone: |
Which areas appear clearest or sharpest in the photograph? Which do not?
Which areas of the photograph are brightest? Are there any shadows? Does the photograph allow you to guess the time of day? Is the light natural or artificial? Harsh or soft? Reflected or direct? Are there objects in the photograph that act as lines? Are they straight, curvy, thin, thick? Do the lines create direction in the photograph? Do they outline? Do the lines show movement or energy? Are there any objects, shapes or lines which repeat and create a pattern? Do you see geometric (straight edged) or organic (curvy) shapes? Which are they? Is there depth to the photograph or does it seem shallow? What creates this appearance? Are there important negative (empty) spaces in addition to positive (solid) spaces? Is there depth created by spatial illusions i.e. perspective? If you could touch the surface of the photograph how would it feel? How do the objects in the picture look like they would feel? Is there a range of tones from dark to light? Where is the darkest value? Where is the lightest? |
These photos are what my first attempts at what i thought abstract photos would look like
the following images are my first attempts and refinements on photograms I feel like they have turned out very well
DuoTones
these are my first attempts at Duo Tones and I got the hang of making these very easily.

Research
Ernst Haas
Ernst Haas is one of the first people to experiment with coloured photography and is famous for making pictures using long shutter speeds. he was also fascinated by water and the way it reflects light in many different ways. he pictured water throughout his career. Haas caught my eye because its a different way to make abstract images i would like to play around with some moving water and experiment with light, shade and maybe some photoshop as well.

Saul Leiter
Saul Leiter was an American photographer and painter whose early work in the 1940s and 1950s was an important contribution to what came to be recognized as the New York school of photography. he was known for taking pictures of people through windows in various different types of weather
Dafna Talmor
First of all dafna talked about her first steps in photography and how she didn't always take pictures of landscapes but took pictures of inside places and obstructed the outside view that was through the window. but then she experimented with taking picture of the landscape she decide to obscure the parts of the image that are man made things e.g. roads, lamp posts and buildings. she then did a demo on how to make some of the images which she used slides and all types of tape glue and tipex.

Research photoshoot
these set of pictures are inspired by Ernst Haas because of the way he takes pictures through water and uses their reflection but I didn't use the reflection I used see through tape and the flashlight of my phone to create different colours in the water and i came out with interesting results
